This work is rooted in three key principles:

  • School-Centred Collaboration
  • A Long-term, Holistic Approach
  • Looking Outward, Applying Inward

We believe that the most powerful forms of support for young people are fundamentally collaborative. To improve levels of high attainment and HE progression, we need to bring together the resources, knowledge and expertise of schools, colleges, universities and the charitable sector to form a coherent approach to creating equity for under resourced children. At the same time, we believe that schools are the most powerfully placed institutions for delivering improved academic outcomes for young people. Our work, therefore, is always school-centred, working with schools to support pupils and ensuring broader support complements and reinforces what pupils experience in school.
We take a cradle to career, or ‘playground to PhD’ approach to supporting young people. We believe that, to improve levels of higher education progression and retention for under resourced young people, we must:
  • Begin ‘upstream’, ensuring that they can succeed academically from the start of their school careers
  • Maintain support throughout the primary, secondary and further education phases, and at university.
We are committed to proactively seeking out innovative and successful approaches to improving attainment and levels of HE progression from throughout the UK and beyond.

At the same time, we acknowledge that the South West region presents very specific barriers for to young people as a region (see Our Analysis). We are committed to continuously deepening and developing our knowledge and understanding of the challenges face be young people in the South West to ensure our work reflects these challenges.
